This handkerchief is sewn by me in Wales. The image is printed in the UK onto an untreated cotton fabric certified as 100% organic. The approximate size for each handkerchief is 320 mm x 320 mm.
The fox is known to be a cunning trickster in the folklore of many different cultures and is also known as a shape shifter. In Japan, stories of fox possession are found in the folk talks from all regions and depictions of foxes can be found at Shinto shrines. I spend a lot of time and energy worrying about a fox eating one or all of my chickens but I also live in the heart of fox hunting country. I hope that all the foxes around here have enough cunning and wiles to outsmart and outrun the hunt.
Holly was brought into the house to both keep evil spirits out and also provide a home for faeries on the coldest nights. I love the story of the Holly King who defeats the Oak King on the Summer Solstice to rule until the Winter Solstice when the Oak King wins the fight. Holly trees were often planted near houses as they are traditionally known to protect the home during a lightening storm and holly is associated with the Norse gods Thor and Freya.
The border for many of my designs illustrates trees chosen for their associations with old customs and beliefs. They are Elder, Oak, Ivy and Holly. I have also included some of the phases of the moon.
Every handkerchief is sent out with the explanation of where the inspiration came from and with full care instructions.
