Pebble from a Stream, Dartmoor 2025
Coloured pencil drawing
I’m sure if you’re reading this you will have picked up many pebbles on many walks, along with feathers, pine cones, bones and all manor of treasures. Somehow bringing a piece of the wild landscape back for inside our homes keeps it alive inside us. Last year I stayed in a cottage on Carolyn Hillyer’s land with five women I had never met and barely spoken to. We were all enrolled on the Braided River Pilgrimage Journey that Carolyn holds online. Two of them are now dear friends and we connected with each other and the incredible landscape, steeped in history and profound beauty. This granite rock was in the stream by Carolyn’s home, a place that I had been working with but at a remove, working through my course online and building the landscape from photos and maps in my head. To actually be there was very special and this rock connects me back to there. This also reminds me of a quote from John Ruskin, writer, artist, environmentalist and a great hero of mine who saw every rock as a “mountain in miniature”. This rock has a watermark, above and below water, as above, so below.
This drawing is has a black MDF frame with glass and metal hanging cord. It will be well packaged and sent recorded delivery.
This is an original artwork created for the Wheel of the Year exhibition at Oil and Oak Gallery 7th February - 30th April 2025
