The kitchen is the heart of this small cottage. We have the original wonky terracotta tiles on the floor and a long old wooden kitchen table where we do everything. I have dressers and shelves full of cook books and jars and jars of food and spices from around the world and a lot of locally foraged and preserved food.
I think that eating and living seasonally helps you enjoy what every season has to offer. Winter is certainly when the hard work of endless pickling, bottling and preserving begins to ebb and I start to turn my attention to Christmas cakes, puddings and mincemeat. I have begun to celebrate the Winter Solstice much more in recent years and last year we were at Stonehenge which was one of the most magical and profound experiences I've ever had.
I welcome the dark and use it to regenerate myself with long nights in front of the open fire, knitting socks for Christmas presents and jumpers for myself, listening to audiobooks and reading ghost stories. My parents always made Christmas the highlight of the year and I am so grateful to them for that. It will always be a very special time for me because of family and being with loved ones.... and the food 💚
In this design is the book that myself and some friends refer to as the sacred text: Winter in the Alps by Manuela Darling-Gansser. What a stunning book. We based a whole festival in January around it's celebration and called it Alpmas. Feel free to celebrate it yourself. Just pick a date towards the end of January and drink a lot of winter cocktails, red wine and pour melted cheese on everything, preferably potatoes cooked with garlic. I also love Diana Henry's book, Roast Figs Sugar Snow at this time of year, it's full of delicious recipes and ideas to warm the soul and her writing is always superb. Nigel Slater's The Christmas Chronicles is just beautiful. I have it on audiobook as well as a physical copy and have listened to it four times.
This design is also available as an A5 greeting card and as an A4 print. For just an extra £3 you can add a Seasonal Kitchen Notepad or a Lunar Intentions notepad to your tea towel order.
Each order is wrapped in acid free, unbleached tissue paper, tied with yarn and includes a hand written thank you note. I am happy to address this to recipients of gifts at no extra cost. Just let me know in the notes when you place your order.
