I think Lance sums it up perfectly in Detectorists when he says that finding buried treasure is like time travel. It is a tangible link to our past directly from the hands of our ancestors. It’s an irresistible connection. From the Staffordshire Hoard and the Sutton Hoo gallery at the British Museum, to the Hallaton Hoard in the library in Market Harborough where I used to live, I am bewitched by buried treasure. Not for the gold but for the human connection.
Eric bought me three pieces of buried treasure for Christmas. Two of them have been drawn into this design. Both medieval, one is a bronze panther ring and one is a lead spindle whorl. I cried when I opened them. I couldn’t believe I was allowed to keep something so old and so precious. I went to sleep on Christmas night clutching that panther in my hand. I have had it close by or on my person ever since.
This is also a celebration of the television programme, Detectorists. I was slow to the party, discovering this gem in lockdown and devouring it within a week. It’s a love letter to the earth, to our past and to the future. And just brilliant TV.
The border for many of my designs illustrates trees chosen for their associations with old customs and beliefs. They are Elder, Oak, Ivy and Holly. I have also included some of the phases of the moon.
Each order is wrapped in acid free, unbleached tissue paper, tied with yarn and includes a hand written thank you note. I am happy to address this to recipients of gifts at no extra cost. Just let me know in the notes when you place your order.
